INSEAD KNOWLEDGE: The Global Information Technology, Report 2012

ABSTRACT   In 2001, when the World Economic Forum first published The Global Information and Technology Report (GITR), the dot-com bubble had just burst; there were fewer than 20 million mobile phone users in all of Africa; and Apple Inc.’s product line was confined to Macintosh computers. That Report presented an optimistic view of the future, highlighting the transformational potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) in advancing the progress of global society and business. In the decade that followed, Booz & Company has witnessed firsthand the realization of that potential in its work with clients and communities worldwide and through its...

STANFORD Graduate School of Business: Fallacies, Irrelevant Facts, and Myths in the Discussion of Capital Regulation – Why Bank Equity is Not Expensive

Abstract We examine the pervasive view that “equity is expensive,” which leads to claims that high capital requirements are costly and would affect credit markets adversely. We find that arguments made to support this view are either fallacious, irrelevant, or very weak. For example, the return on equity contains a risk premium that must go down if banks have more equity. It is thus incorrect to assume that the required return on equity remains fixed as capital requirements increase. It is also incorrect to translate higher taxes paid by banks to a social cost. Policies that subsidize debt and indirectly penalize...

STANFORD Graduate School of Business: Building Sustainable Organizations – The Human Factor

ABSTRACT Although most of the research and public pressure concerning sustainability has been focused on the effects of business and organizational activity on the physical environment, companies and their management practices profoundly affect the human and social environment as well. This article briefly reviews the literature on the direct and indirect effects of organizations and their decisions about people on human health and mortality. It then considers some possible explanations for why social sustainability has received relatively short shrift in management writing, and outlines a research agenda for investigating the links between social sustainability and organizational effectiveness as well as the...

STANFORD Graduate School of Business: Performance-Based Incentives for Internal Monitors

Abstract:   This study examines the use of performance-based incentives for internal monitors (general counsel and chief internal auditor) and whether these incentives impair monitors’ independence by aligning their interests with the interests of those being monitored. We find evidence that incentives are greater when monitors’ job duties contribute more to the firm’s production function, when other top managers receive greater incentives, and when a firm has lower expected litigation risk. We also find evidence that firms provide more incentives when there is greater demand for internal monitoring. We find no evidence that internal monitor incentives impair the monitoring function. Instead, our...

Can we put the question of Existential Intelligence for Strategic Leadership?, D.Bourantas

Abstract The roots of the word existential are existence and exist. To exist means to live and so, to think about your existence means to think about your life and perhaps Life itself. In those moments when we are thinking about the meaning of our individual lives or the greater purpose and mission of our group, we are engaged in existential thinking. In this paper, we attempt to define and explain the existential intelligence. The initial motivation has been given from the original work of Howard Gardner on Multiple Intelligences, in which he firstly introduced the term. Additionally, the basic ideas...
